Growing a Community Garden in North Park
North Park doesn't have a walkable or bikeable community garden, so a group of neighbors is working to build one. We're a volunteer-run effort, currently forming our nonprofit and working with the City of San Diego on a site at North Park Community Park.
Current Status
We're an all-volunteer group in the early stages: forming a nonprofit board, preparing our 501(c)(3) application, and working through the City of San Diego's community garden process for a site at North Park Community Park. It's a multi-year effort, and we'd love your help.
- Step 1: Nonprofit formation — Incorporating, building our board, and filing for federal 501(c)(3) status.
- Step 2: City review — Working with the City of San Diego Parks & Recreation Department through the formal community garden site process.
- Step 3: Garden construction — Building raised beds, a gathering space, an entrance trellis, and an outdoor learning area for the neighborhood.
Why Now
The North Park Community Plan identifies community gardens as a way to preserve green space, build social connection, and put unused property to good use. Right now, there's no easy way for North Park residents to walk or bike to a community garden, and we're working to change that.
